American Legion answers “Call for Help”

The American Legion Post 184, of Wildwood, answered a call for help from its neighbors last week by donating $1,200 in non-perishable food items to the United Way food pantry, 230 East Maple Avenue, Wildwood.”We love to give out money where it’s really needed,” Vice Commander, Norm Marlin said.

And according to United Way Executive Director Suzanne Nardi, the donation came just in time. Read more…

Comfort and joy served up at United Way’s hot lunch program

The holidays may be over, but every Thursday, the spirit of giving is still going strong at the United Way of Cape May County’s hot lunch program. With winter winds blowing outside, some county residents can barely afford the cost of housing and heating, and other necessities like food can be difficult to come by.

For some, the hot lunch served every Thursday in the First Baptist Church community room on Maple Avenue, is the only hot, nutritious meal they eat all week, and it’s a rare chance to relax with friends and enjoy their company. Read more…

United Way helps identify and assist homeless residents

The community hall at the First Baptist Church is abuzz with activity every Thursday when United Way volunteers and staff host a hot lunch program for county residents in search of a hot meal and other basic needs. That’s why it seemed like the perfect place to hold the county’s second annual Project Homeless Connect day, a national initiative aimed at raising awareness about homelessness and providing information to county residents on much-needed human services. A call for help from the United Way pantry

“Mother Hubbard’s cupboards are bare,” said Suzanne Nardi, the Executive Director of the United Way of Cape May County, and the number of residents, who come to the United Way’s First Call for Help food pantry, on Maple Avenue in Wildwood, is increasing every week.

The pantry, which opens every Thursday morning at 10 a.m., provides dozens of residents with the food they need to get by, supplies are dwindling. Read more…
