Glenwood students “cheer” to see the Globetrotters
Sunday, April 6th, 2008
A special visit from the Harlem Globetrotter’s Moo Moo Evens promised to be the highlight of the week for the fourth and fifth grade students who gathered in Glenwood Avenue Elementary School’s all-purpose room one day in March. It was part of the Globetrotters community outreach program called CHEER, which is intended to motivate kids to live better lives through “cooperation, healthy mind and body, effort, enthusiasm and responsibility.”
Globetrotter MooMoo Evans commended Glenwood Avenue School’s student volunteers for giving back to the community through their work at the United Way Food Pantry.
And the community spirit and cooperation of the Glenwood Avenue students is really something to cheer about, United Way of Cape May County’s executive director, Suzanne Nardi and chairman, John Lynch said. They both attended the event with Evens at the school on Thursday to recognize the school’s peer leaders, who volunteer at the United Way’s food pantry, sorting food and clothing for distribution and setting up for the hot lunch program. Evens commended the volunteers for giving back in their community, but Lynch said the United Way wanted to do something more. So… they returned to the school with an even bigger surprise.
“I guess you are all wondering what you are doing back here today,” Lynch said. “Well, what comes around, goes around, and because of your good behavior and your warm welcome for Moo Moo Evens yesterday, we are sending all of you to see the Globetrotters on Monday (March 17).”
United Way Chairman John Lynch and Executive Director Suzanne Nardi told Glenwood Avenue School students that they are being treated to night on the town with the Harlem Globetrotters March 17 in recognition of their enthusiasm and community spirit. A group of students volunteers regularly at the United Way’s food pantry and hot lunch program on Maple Avenue in Wildwood.
Some 50 Glenwood Avenue school students and their chaperones attended the special evening with the Globetrotters, including dinner, pre-game fun on the court with “Globetrotter’s University” and a chance to see Philadelphia Eagles John Runyan take on the Globetrotters as a member of the opposing Washington Generals basketball team. The event was sponsored by the United Way through the generosity of local businesses.
“We are very proud of the students at the Glenwood Avenue School,” Nardi said. “We are so happy to be able to treat them to this special night.”
