For some people, shopping is a drudgery, but not for Ray Seible, of North Wildwood. Every week, Seible checks grocery store sale ads, clips coupons and organizes his plan of attack with the all the precision and skill of a military operation.

His mission—to get as many groceries as possible with as little money as he can spend, and when the job the done, he donates most of his booty of groceries to charity.
“Ray donates nearly all the cereal that we have on our shelves,” United Way of Cape May County, Financial and Development Director, Stephanie Hoover said. It is one of the things that the clients at the organization’s food pantry on Maple Avenue would otherwise do without.
“Cereal is really expensive,” she said, and Seible’s donations help put a healthy breakfast on the table for many of the county’s working poor.
Seible admits that finding bargains is one of his hobbies and his passion. It’s the thrill of the chase that makes it fun, and he is known to visit several local supermarkets during his weekly bargain-hunting sprees.
“They hate to see me coming,” he said.
It’s hard to make a profit on an expert shopper like him. In fact, he once bought more than $60 worth of groceries for 36 cents.
“It was triple coupons,” he said.
He loves the thrill of the chase, but as an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, he also loves the great feeling he gets from helping others.
“It is my mission in life to feed the hungry,” Seible said, and the folks at the United Way appreciate his dedication. That’s why he was awarded with a Starfish Award for volunteerism in May.
“Ray is an example of the dedication and passion that our volunteers bring to helping others,” United Way Executive Director, Suzanne Nardi said. “We are so grateful for his kindness.”
