United Way's Stephanie Hoover and Jessica Gonzalez joined volunteers from Cape Bank like Vanessa Hoover, from the Egg Harbor Township branch and Kim Truitt from Stone Harbor, in a day of duck-sorting fun. But there is more to do. Can you help?
That’s why volunteers from Cape Bank joined United Way Financial and Development Director, Stephanie Hoover and Board Member Jessica Gonzales, of Sturdy Bank, for a day of duck-sorting fun at the official United Way “Rubber Duck Training Center” at Coastline Cooling and Heating in Burleigh.
The ducks will be distributed this week, and soon they will be available at local banks and businesses to benefit United Way sponsored programs.
Old favorites like the Fireman and Soccer ducks are finding their places among new friends like the Rock and Roll duck and the Cowgirl duck–each one charming in his or her own way, and eager for adoption by Rubber Ducky fans. New duck parents are also eligible to win fantastic prizes from local businesses at the Regatta at Morey’s Raging Water’s water park next month.
But there is still plenty of work to be done in preparation for the United Way’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and the duckies need your help.
If you can lend a hand, the United Way offers many volunteer opportunities, where you can make friends (feathered and otherwise) with people dedicated to making Cape May County the best that it can be. To see how you can help, call 609-729-2002, or visit uwcmc.org

Sturdy Savings Bank Employees help out by serving a hot lunch in 2009
The holidays may be over, but every Thursday, the spirit of giving is still going strong at the United Way of Cape May County’s hot lunch program. With winter winds blowing outside, some county residents can barely afford the cost of housing and heating, and other necessities like food can be difficult to come by, but they know that they can count on at least one hot nutritious meal every Thursday at the First Baptist Church’s Community room on Maple Avenue in Wildwood.
“It’s more than just the meal,” Executive Director Suzanne Nardi said. “Our guests, who come to the weekly lunch, say over and over again how grateful they are that there are people in the community who care about them.”
A variety of religious, civic and business groups, as well as individuals, volunteer to help with the program each week. They plan a meal that includes salad and dessert, purchase the groceries and arrive together on the morning of the luncheon to prepare and serve it. And whether it is a church group, a civic group or a local business, those preparing and serving the meal inevitably come away from the luncheon with a strengthened sense of community.
“Volunteers tell me often how nice it is to work on a project with their friends and colleagues that brings such immediate comfort to others,” Nardi said.
In addition, the lunch program puts people in touch with agencies that provide the help they need to make their lives better.
“The program offers human service organizations a chance to share information about the services they provide,” Nardi said. “We are always looking for speakers, who are looking for a way to reach the people who need them most.”
Volunteers are needed throughout the winter months. To find out more about how you, your friends and coworkers can help or to schedule a time to present information to United Way clients, call Nardi at 729-2002.

Since the Rubber Ducky Regatta in August, bags of cute rubber duckies have been quietly hibernating in a local storage facility, waiting to be resorted and inventoried for next year’s race. But now is the time for all ducks to be counted, and the United Way of Cape May County is searching for a group of committed volunteers who are just daffy enough to make it happen.
“We have literally thousands of ducks,” United Way of Cape May County Executive Director Suzanne Nardi said. “And each and every one has to be accounted for.” Read more…

“Mother Hubbard’s cupboards are bare,” said Suzanne Nardi, the Executive Director of the United Way of Cape May County, and the number of residents, who come to the United Way’s First Call for Help food pantry, on Maple Avenue in Wildwood, is increasing every week.
The pantry, which opens every Thursday morning at 10 a.m., provides dozens of residents with the food they need to get by, supplies are dwindling. Read more…
